Luka Chuppi movie review

Luka Chuppi movie review: Luka Chuppi, movie starring Kartik Aaryan as Guddu and Kriti Sanon as Rashmi. Kartik Aaryan started his acting career with a buddy movie, Pyaar ka Punchnama which is about three young men who face romantic problems. He went on to play romantic lead roles in female oriented movies like Akash Vani in 2013 and Kaanchi – The Unbreakable in 2014. However, these film commercially did not do well. He collaborated with Ranjan and Bharucha for 2 more buddy films in 2015 and 2018 respectively – Pyar ka Punchnama 2 and Sonu Ke Titu ki Sweety which were a super success financially. Sonu Ke Titu ki Sweety was the top grossing movie of 2018.

Luka Chuppi Movie Review

Luka Chuppi

Kriti Sanon made her acting debut in a Telegu Psychological thriller and her first Hindi debut in the film Heropanti both in 2014. She was awarded the best Female Debut for the movie Heropanti at the Filmfare. She then went on to do several other films which were commercial successes. Dilwale (2015) which was an action comedy was the highest grossing films of all times. Followed by romantic comedies like Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017) and her latest Luka Chuppi. She started her career with modelling and have been brand ambassador for several brands from Closeup, Vivel, Amul, Samsung, Himalaya, Bata etc. She is the favourite of many designers like Ritu Beri, Suneet Varma and Niki Mahajan.

Luka Chuppi is a romantic comedy and a story about Guddu, the protagonist. Guddu is a television reporter and in his journey of work and life, he meets Rashmi. Their love soon escalates and Guddu proposes to Rashmi for marriage. But in a daring attempt, Rashmi asks for a live-in relationship before taking a plunge into marriage. Being from the North of India, live- in relationship was quite unusual and were up in the arms against this new trend and not to forget the father of the bride who himself leads the protest who is a local right-wing party leader.

In the movie you will not have a dull moment. It is a situational comedy cinema where the situation is nothing but live-in relationship. It all started as a news coverage or Guddu, the reporter but apparently it turned out to be his own story with really funny twists and complications. The movie is a clean entertainer with peddling towards some social issues like gender inequality, youth generation, misogyny, politics, moral policing, caste issues etc that are handled in a hilarious and harmless way.

Director Laxman Utekar has done a commendable job. As a debutante, he is familiar with the nuances of movie making and clearly visible through balancing the whole movie by covering all aspects like comedy, romance, social message and quirky characters. Character of Guddu is more like a polished, simple, small town boy unlike his role in Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety which is overpowering and street-smart. Same is the character of Rashmi (Kriti Sanon). She has nailed the small town character with her prettiness and the girl next door without going overboard. Ironically, their chemistry on screen has not set hearts-on-fire but they seem to be comfortable and surprisingly they are the only two good looking people in that whole town.

Characters of supporting actors had pulled the movie together. However, it was a mixed reaction regarding their performances. Aparshakti Khurana who played the role of a friend adequately well but there were not enough punch lines or humour in his dialogues. Pankaj Tripathi, who is a pro in this genre has not been utilised to his calibre which if etched well could have escalated the fun elements in the movie. The roles of other actors are balanced well, may it be the crazy family from Guddu’s side or Rashmi’s dad who does the protest on inconsequential issues.

The first half of the movie is funny, entertaining, fast, seat grabber, packed with incidents which make your tummy pain with laughter and unpredictable twist. The second half too has LOL moments though some humour gets repetitive. Overall the movie is a must watch and a good entertainer with a message which is not too loud but clear for sure. The songs – Coca Cola and Poster Lagwa De have been everyone’s favourite but other songs which are mostly remixes are in question for its freshness.

Critics have a mixed review for the movie. Critics I mean here is the public. Though the story has a funny side but bringing in social side focussing on couple of them in the same script sounded as the director was confused. There is a strong feedback towards the mix up of the characters. Though Pankaj Tripathi is definitely the show stopper but other characters were mixed and displayed less clarity. Actors could have given more life to the movie. Screenplay could have been bit more serious and matured making the story to look more stable. Overall,  Luka Chuppi is a must watch, clean entertainer for your family with a heartwarming message.
