Walking to cure Diabetes: How Dave Nevins, Others Raising Funds for JDRF Canada

Walking to cure Diabetes: How Dave Nevins, Others Raising Funds for JDRF Canada: Every year supporters of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) lace up their tennis shoes and walk to find a cure. Cities of all sizes across Canada take part in the Sun Life Walk to Cure Diabetes for JDRF, scheduling their fundraising events throughout the summer months. Those who don’t live in a participating city or who can’t make it to their local walk can even do a Virtual Walk whenever and wherever suits them.

The Sun Life Walk to Cure Diabetes for JDRF is designed to raise funds for Type 1 diabetes research as well as raise awareness about the condition. After registering for the walk, participants can raise funds on their own or as part of a team through personalized online donation pages.

For the past 40 years, JDRF has been a leader in both advocacy and fundraising for Type 1 (sometimes called juvenile) diabetes. Their three research goals are to find cure therapies, treatment therapies, and preventive therapies to help current patients feel their best and prevent the disease in future generations. JDRF researches and advocates for people of all ages and stages of Type 1 diabetes. The foundation’s goal is to provide “less T1D” until they can find a way to make the world “no T1D.”

In addition to the Sun Life Walk to Cure Diabetes for JDRF, the organization holds a number of other fundraising events throughout the year. The JDRF Revolution Ride to Defeat Diabetes, for example, is a high-energy stationary cycling event for individuals and teams. Participants can ride for 7 minutes as part of a 5-person team, ride 60 minutes as an individual, take part in rides that take place in the USA, or participate virtually from anywhere. Riders raise funds and awareness for Type 1 Diabetes while working up a sweat. Supporters around the country can find galas, concerts, and more events that raise money for the cause.

JDRF has many generous supporters across Canada, including some well-known community figures. Dave Nevins, COO of InterRent REIT, a growth-oriented real estate trust, is proud to support Type 1 diabetes research. Each year, he and his company participate in JDRF’s Revolution Ride to Defeat Diabetes as a part of supporting the organization. Giving back is an important part of not only his personal life, but his professional life as well. Nevins says that he views “volunteering for causes [he cares] deeply about as both a responsibility and a passion.”

Dave Nevins is in good company among community leaders who support JDRF. Toronto-based author and educator Suzanne Reisler Litwin is one of the top individual fundraisers for the Sun Life Walk to Cure Diabetes for JDRF this year and her team, Suzie’s Sweethearts, has taken the lead, raising over $25,000 thus far. Mike Milloy, president and CEO of Kitchener’s construction company Gateman-Milloy, Inc., has also raised a significant amount of funds for the JDRF walk, using his place in his community to raise awareness in addition to funding for Type 1 diabetes.

With over 8,000 donors and upwards of $1 million raised so far, the 2019 Sun Life Walk to Cure Diabetes for JDRF is already a success. If you want to support the cause, there may still be time to register for a walk in your city or the Virtual Walk. Join leaders like Dave Nevins, Suzanne Reisler Litwin, and Mike Milloy to do your part to defeat Type 1 diabetes.
